Today, I stode on the auction block.

Feb 14, 1750

Today was filled with pain and sorrow. My knees were shaking as I walked up the steps to the auction block. Standing straight and tall, I peered out at the crowd of unfriendly white faces. I was hoping for a new master who would not beat me. Since I helped cook at my old master’s plantation, maybe I won’t have to work in the fields at the new place. I’m scared and I miss my mother.

My sister said that I am lucky because I could go to plantation that is closer to the North. It would be easier to escape if I lived in Virginia instead of Louisiana. She told me to try to find Harriet Tubman. I have heard about the Underground Railroad. I know part of the quilt code. Maybe I will find freedom.

Today was a bad day. My mistress beet me because I droped a fork on the floor I miss my mother, but now I have a new mother. She is helping me survive this new plantation and is teaching how to sew.  I want to keep working in the big house.
